Warm regards Tanuj spironox at gmail.com ===== Name of the Project: ?Facilitating Education and Development of Working Children in Surat City.? Goal of the project: Developing full potential of working children and facilitating them to prepare themselves for meaningful participation in adult life. Objectives: * Providing opportunities for entry/re-entry in formal education * Providing/upgrading vocational skills * Arresting exploitation and sexual abuse at workplace * Reducing addiction * Developing life skills * Setting up a Child Center for parental counseling, child guidance, bridge education, vocational training, advocacy and awareness on child rights and recreational facility. . Target Group: 100 Working Children in the age group of 10 ? 15 years Project Area: South Zone Slums of Surat City. Time Period of Project: 3 years Area Profile: Surat is a major industrial city of Gujarat situated on the banks of the Tapi river. It is home to silk textile Industry, diamond Industry, textile chemical and machinery, construction industry, etc. The population of Surat is around 35 lakhs, a large proportion of which are migrant workers. These migrant workers live in slums in and around the industries i.e. around Textile market area, Mithi Khadi and Limbayat Area and Udhna area. There are many textile industries, power looms, textile market shops, small and large units of ancillary industries, dyeing and printing mills, etc. in this area. Due to large-scale poverty of these families many children are forced into child labor at a young age. These children are unable to complete even a basic education and hence are socially and economically deprived and exploited in many ways all their life long. We have also observed that many children migrate along with elders from rural area of Rajasthan, Orissa, Bihar and other states with a dream of good life in city without realizing what is awaiting them here. They discontinue education in desire for earning money and glamour of city life. These children are engaged in work like rag picking, textile industry [looms, market], tea stalls, domestic, shops, and other petty casual labor. It is estimated that there are more than 5,000 children are working in industries of this area. These children come from very poor and socially exploited families. Due to such poor economic conditions the children are unable to complete even basic education and are made to join work in the various industries in the area. Most young children are employed in small shops and by hawkers to sell various goods. Their working conditions are very poor and unhygienic plus they are paid very less. This exploitation of the children is very high. Cases of child abuse are very common and they go unreported or unnoticed. The health aspects of the children are also ignored since early childhood and hence they are normally victims of malnutrition. These children are also at the risk of contacting HIV/AIDS. Surat Municipal Corporation runs primary schools in Gujarati medium as well as vernacular medium like telugu, urdu, marathi etc. However, due to difficult educational levels and lack of awareness and importance regarding education among parents the push out rate of children from main stream education is also high and these children are forced very early in life into child labor. The environment at municipal schools may pose many problems for these children. Schools are overcrowded, teacher ? student ratio in vernacular medium is poor, the salary of teacher is good but expenditure on educational facilities is minimum, there is lack of cleanliness, lack of monitoring by parents, as well as neglect by teachers ? all these factors in addition to economic reasons are responsible for push out of children. Project Description: Due to lack of any specific skills and formal education the children are unable to enter / return back to mainstream society even if they may wish to in the future. There is little hope of a bright future for them as they will be forced to do manual labor for the rest of their lives. This Project aims at providing a platform for these children to get the opportunity to avail of new skills and formal education which would facilitate their entry / reentry into mainstream society and thus be able to shape their future in a better manner. It also aims at linking them for future opportunities of gainful employment. The project would be implemented in area of southern zone of Surat city where there is large slum population of migrants. The project envisages building rapport with families and schools and linking / re-linking these children to formal education. The project would also facilitate vocational training to help their children earn their living while in education and participate in a better in city?s economic life as adults in future. The project would also work on promoting child rights by organizing awareness programs among important stakeholders like parents, teachers, employers and others. Project Activities: * Rapport building in the community * Identifying 100 children working as child labor part/full time * Identification of specific problems and needs of these children * Counseling to Children for developing life skills as they are at the threshold of adolescence. * Parent counseling * Recreation Activities like sports, yoga, and meditation for the children. Educating them through these activities. * Providing Medical and Nutritional help to the youth * Providing Basic Education skills like reading, writing and communication to the children and thus facilitating their entry into mainstream education. * Linking them with schools by providing Bridge Education and assisting in their entry / re-entry in schools and motivating children to go for higher education. * Periodic liasoning with schools. * Developing vocational skills among children Monitoring and Evaluation Process: 1) Weekly staff meeting 2) Monthly and Quarterly progress Reports 3) Annual progress reports 4) Field Visits by Funding Agency Deliverables: ==> The project would cover 100 children in the age group 10 to 15 at any given time. ==> 80 % of the participants would complete at least primary education. ==> 40 % of the participants would complete education up to class 10 ==> 50 % of the children would receive vocational training. ==> 100 % children to be covered under counseling for life skills. ====== --------------------------------- Sick sense of humor?
